Covington, Ky. - A chapter of the Young Christian Workers (YCW) was established in Northern Kentucky in the mid-1950s where a group of young, single Catholics gathered each week for fellowship, activism and socializing. Eventually, the local group met its demise after many married, but new groups emerged soon after.
Over time while raising families, several new groups were established from the original YCW local chapter. The Poker Club was one group, with a subgroup that became known as the Usual Suspects.
The Usual Suspects friendship has lasted for more than 50 years. As they raised families, gatherings became annual events that included monthly dinners, holiday parties, weekend getaways and the men’s monthly card club.
As they moved into retirement, new activities emerged including taking extended trips to such places as Ireland, California and the Cumberland Gap. Several of the “usual suspects” meet twice a week for exercise at the senior center in Ludlow, Ky. Others volunteer for local groups, while some continue to work part-time or seasonally.
In the last few years, health problems began to surface for some of the members. However, that hasn’t stopped them from finding ways to be together. The women tend to create spontaneous events on a weekly basis. They call each other daily, make home visits and prepare meals together. Each one of the Suspects finds ways to stay active mentally, physically and spiritually, but it isn’t always easy. Although it isn’t always within their control, their determination is unwavering.
To learn more about the story, the multimedia feature reflects on the importance of friendship, coping with illness and how they view this new stage in their life.
