Serving the interests of the 50-plus age group, the innovative online magazine Second Spring explores what it means to be aging in society today. This publication offers fresh viewpoints on a range of stories that enlighten, entertain and engage readers. The magazine offers regular sections on health, money, travel and technology while featuring unique centerpiece stories with in-depth reporting.

Christina Paolucci, a graduate student in multimedia at Ohio University, developed the Second Spring online magazine under the guidance of faculty and fellow classmates for a class project in the School of Visual Communication in the spring of 2009. It was a ten-week journey to create a magazine, which included formulating an original mission, an interactive design and generating rich content.

Ten days in the field were spent capturing three stories exploring issues for active seniors. The stories that enfolded over the week were rich and plentiful. Although only a glimpse is offered about this culture, these stories aim to inspire and give pause to reflect.

The April 2009 issue highlights three unique stories that illustrate the life of a community in Northern Kentucky. The main multimedia feature, “The Usual Suspects,” explores four couples dealing with aging through the support of their life-long friendship. In addition, the magazine offers two departments pieces: Take 5 and Panorama. In Take 5,features a video short about synchronized swimmers, while Panorama features an interactive piece on the Mother of God Choral Club in a local historic church.
